Jack Nicklaus – the architect behind Quivira, Cabo’s latest golf course opening

As a player, course designer and good-will ambassador, no single person has changed the face of the sport more than Jack Nicklaus, and no name is more synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf than his.

Jack-Nicklaus1-1024x682

Jack, 74, has been named “Golfer of the Century” or “Golfer of the Millennium” by almost every major golf publication in the world. He was also named Individual Male Athlete of the Century by Sports Illustrated and one of the 10 Greatest Athletes of the Century by ESPN.

In November 2005, the Golden Bear was honored by President Bush at the White House with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor given to any civilian. The honor punctuated a year in which Jack played his final British Open, perhaps his final Masters Tournament and led the United States to a thrilling victory in The Presidents Cup.

Jack’s competitive career has spanned five decades, and his legend has been built with 120 professional tournament victories worldwide and a record 18 professional major-championship titles. He is the only player in history to have won each of the game’s majors at least three times (six Masters, five PGA Championships, four U.S. Opens, three British Opens), and is the only player to have completed the career “Grand Slam” on both the regular and senior tours.

Jack is a five-time winner of the PGA Player of the Year Award, has been the PGA Tour’s leading money-winner eight times and runner-up six times. He has played on six Ryder Cup teams, captained two other Ryder Cup teams and served as U.S. captain for four Presidents Cup teams.

The legacy Jack has left as a player can be rivaled only by the legacy he is leaving as a golf-course designer.

Jack was named GolfWorld’s Architect of the Year in 1993, and in 1999, Golf Digest named him the world’s leading active designer. In February 2005, the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America recognized Jack with its highest honor, The Old Tom Morris Award. In 2001, he received both the Donald Ross Award (American Society of Golf Course Architects) and the Donald Rossi Award (Golf Course Builders Association of America), and was honored with the International Network of Golf’s Achievement in Golf Course Design Award for 2000-2001.

To date, Nicklaus has been involved in the design of 290 courses open for play worldwide, and his thriving business, Nicklaus Design, has 380 courses open for play around the world. Nicklaus Design courses are represented in 36 countries, 39 states, and at least 110 have hosted a combined total of close to 750 professional tournaments or significant national amateur championships. The firm currently has projects under construction or under development in 22 different countries. Quivira Golf Club will be Nicklaus Design’s sixth course in Los Cabos and his 23rd overall in Mexico.

Since 1962, Jack has added the moniker of “businessman” to his lengthy résumé. He is chairman of the privately held Nicklaus Companies. In October 2008, Golf Inc. magazine ranked Jack “The Most Powerful Person in Golf” for the fifth consecutive year, due to his impact on various aspects of the industry through his course design work, marketing and licensing business, and his involvement on a national level with various charitable causes. He was also named “Golf Development Newsmaker of the Year” for 2005 by Golf Inc., and the Robb Report once named Jack the “Leading Power Player” in the golf market.

In January 2008, Jack was recognized for his global impact through design as well as his philanthropic efforts at home when he was presented with The Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. Bestowed by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the award recognizes executives who exemplify a commitment to the common good—beyond the bottom line—and who demonstrate that private firms should be stellar citizens in their own neighborhoods, as well as in the world.

Jack and his wife Barbara have a long history of involvement in numerous charitable activities, from junior golf to children’s hospitals to several scholarship foundations. Because of their contributions to golf and to community, Barbara and Jack have been honored many times, including the 2007 Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award.

Residing in North Palm Beach, Fla., Jack and Barbara Nicklaus are parents to five children and grandparents to 23.

It has been said that Quivira -Nicklaus’s 26th design in the Caribbean and Mexico-, may prove to be Jack Nicklaus’ most memorable design. Quivira, will feature more seaside holes than any other course in Los Cabos, in a spectacular setting at the tip of the Baja Peninsula marked by sheer granite cliffs, huge windswept dunes and rolling desert foothills.

KW Cares donates to Hurricane Odile relief efforts in Los Cabos, Mexico

November 15, 2014 the Los Cabos area of B.C.S, México was hit by the perfect storm.

Residents and tourists were preparing for a storm, not a natural disaster. Odile was a level three hurricane by wind speeds – a level five by pressure, 3 cyclones within the storm, and a 4.5 earthquake all which left complete devastation behind including hundreds of families without homes in Cabo San Lucas.

KW Cares Board of Directors, in consultation with KW Mexico leaders, voted to donate $100,000 to two organizations assisting with the recovery from Hurricane Odile.

KW Cares is donating $50,000 to the Mexican Red Cross. More than 100 paramedics are providing basic medical care and delivering food.

redcross

KW Cares is donating an additional $50,000 to Operation Blessing International, an organization they have worked with previously. Operation Blessing is helping Hurricane Odile victims in Mexico by distributing clean water and other supplies, repairing damaged homes and setting up kitchens that will be able to feed an average of 600 families per day.

Keller Williams Worldwide comes to Mexico

Keller Williams Worldwide Expands into Mexico

The new KW Mexico team is led by Operating Principal Mario Aviles and includes Jorge Carbonell, Teresa Anderson, Barbara Gaxoet and Roberto Obregon.

“We want to take the Mexican real estate industry to the next level,” Aviles says. “Our goal is to make KW Mexico the leading real estate company for new generations around the country. Communication, commitment and integrity are the values that will make KW Mexico the real estate company of choice for brokers, agents and clients.”

With 120 million residents in Mexico and a rapidly expanding economy, the Mexican real estate sector is poised for explosive growth and is ready for the culture that is the thread of Keller Williams.

“One of our opportunities is the ability to revolutionize the real estate market in Mexico,” Obregon said. “There’s a lot of potential on the development side.”

Keller Williams, which is the largest real estate franchise by agent count in North America with more than 100,000 associates, announced the expansion plans this week at Mega Camp convention in Austin. The Texas-based company started expanding beyond North America in 2012, and has regions in the countries of Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK and Vietnam. After record-setting years for growth, productivity and profitability, the company is on a path to become the world’s largest real estate franchise by agent count, transactions and volume.

“We are constantly looking for the right business leaders to share the Keller Williams mission, vision and culture around the world,” said Chris Heller, president of Keller Williams Worldwide. “We are excited by the opportunity to work with Mario and his talented team to help real estate professionals in Mexico grow their business and serve clients at the very highest level.”

KW Mexico will emphasize opportunities for real estate professionals to grow and develop their business skills through leading-edge systems and models, education and technology.

“Keller Williams brings to Mexico great opportunities for wealth building and professionalism,” Gaxoet said. “It’s a perfect fit for our family-based networking culture.”

“Keller Williams will begin a red wave for a new generation of real estate professionals,” Carbonell said.

Los Cabos Relief Efforts for Hurricane Odile – largest hurricane to hit Baja California

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 5.02.27 PM

The Los Cabos area was devastated when Hurricane Odile surged into the baja on Sunday night. My family personally survived the terror.  The area will get worse in the near days due to no power, no communications, no inbound travel, no gas for generators, and no water.

The organizations below are ones that I am personally aware of that are either on sight currently or preparing efforts and teams immediately.  Anything you can do to contribute will make a difference!

Thirst No More

Craig Miller, founder of Thirst No More has agreed to help lead efforts in Cabo. There’s no one better for this type of work. He’s asked us to raise money to help put together PAKS (Primary Assistance Kits). These kits are designed to meet the very basic needs of people who have lost everything. PAKS are typically in some sort of plastic containers that can be used to store the items or also to store clean water. The contents include things like soap, wash cloths, towels, sandals, a toy, plates, forks, matches, a cooking pan, flash light with batteries, some food… We also like to give tools like tarps, saws, hammers, and nails that can be used to build temporary shelter. The standard price for a PAK is $50.00 USD and it includes everything in one PAK, as well as cost of getting it to the victims.

When you think of Cabo, most people are thinking of the beautiful resorts and scenery. What many of you don’t know, in the outskirts of Cabo, there are poverty stricken people that live in homemade shacks that they call home. Their “shacks/homes” have been demolished and there are literally thousands misplaced as we speak.
Please go to the Thirst No More website. On the bottom right hand corner you will see a “DONATE” tab, click on it. This will lead you to the next page where you will see a “CLICK HERE” tab underneath the big BLUE DONATE, click on CLICK HERE. Under the drop down tab, select “CABO RELIEF” all the way at the bottom of the list.

Every penny of your donation will go directly to our relief work in Cabo. Thank you for helping us with this effort. We need purification tablets donated as well. If you’re in the Houston area you can drop off at The Waters Church — visit their website for location at www.iamthewaters.com

Bisbee ’s Cabo Relief

Screen Shot 2014-09-17 at 9.04.49 AM

“We’re creating a call to action throughout the global sport-fishing family to help those who have suffered so much in this natural disaster,” Bisbee says. “We’re donating $250,000 in seed money to the Bisbee’s Cabo Relief Fund and ask our generous fellow anglers to help out by donating themselves.

“We’ve developed a two-prong approach that will really make a difference. In partnership with Club Dust (Club Dust on Facebook) volunteers will arrive as soon as the airport reopens and start assessing the situation to provide critical shelter, from tent cities to rebuilding homes,” Bisbee adds. In addition to providing critical shelter in Cabo San Lucas in the storm’s aftermath, the second step to recovery is helping those individually-owned sport-fishing businesses that were directly impacted get back to work.

The money will be routed through the Rotary Club International’s Boulder City, Nevada Club to get where it’s needed the most.

YachtAid Global

YachtAid Global has “a lot in the works” for Hurricane Odile relief, Drewelow says, “every yacht big or small that intends to head south to Cabo needs to bring aid. Recovery will take months.” YachtAid Global is coordinating some efforts with Marine Group Boat Works, which has a facility in Cabo San Lucas, too. Marine Group Boat Works’ San Diego yard is collecting items that are of critical immediate need:

Screen Shot 2014-09-17 at 9.16.27 AM

• drinking water: “water is running out,” Drewelow says. “If power comes on or people get fuel for generators, water can start flowing again in extremely limited quantities.”
• basic first-aid items like bandages, antiseptics and ointments, and hand sanitizers
• food with long shelf life: beans, tuna, canned meat, boxed milk and other beverages
• shelter: pop-up tents, rolls of heavy-duty plastic sheeting, canvas tarps, and small-diameter (¼- to ½-inch) ropes to secure the tarps
• clothing

If you’d like to donate any of these items, you can mail them to:
Attn: Cabo Relief/Leah Yam
Marine Group Boat Works
997 G Street
Chula Vista, CA 91910-3414
If you have questions, contact Leah Yam at Marine Group Boat Works at (619) 427-6767. You can also donate funds via YachtAid Global’s donation page.
Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association
Donations are currently being collected to submit to a transport company in Tijuana, which will take supplies to Los Cabos.

Items needed: flashlights with batteries, trash bags, dust masks, mosquito repellant, tarps, rope, saws, nails, hammers, tents, sleeping bags, water purification tables, used clothing/shoes, matches, candles, etc.

For monetary donations (NO CASH PLEASE) make checks payable to LBSCA (Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association). Please write Hurricane Odile 2014 in the Memo section of the check.

Laguna Nursery has kindly offered to accept supply donations and donation checks at their landmark nursery business site: Laguna Nursery 1370 South Coast Highway Laguna Beach, CA 92651 (HOURS: 8am-5pm 7 days a week)

Casa Hogar

Casa Hogar is a local home for 41 boys ages 3-17 that will need funds to continue and re-build. The facility was severely damaged as the boys survived the hurricane overnight in a class room — however their most important treasure survived! This organization operates solely from private donations. Your gift provides for the needs of the boys including food, housing, transportation, education, medical and dental care and a loving staff the boys consider their family. You enable us to provide a happy and supportive home where every boy is assured a future by either returning to their family, through adoption or a post Casa Hogar education/work plan tailored to their needs.

HGTV’s hit show “House Hunters International” makes it’s way to Cabo

Los Cabos was in the spotlight as HGTV’s hit television series “House Hunters International” aired 2 episodes that were recently filmed in Cabo.

House Hunters International is a 30 minute reality show that takes the viewer through the experience of buying or renting a home internationally. The program shows both the joys and obstacles that can arise from the perspective of real people.

HHINT5704H_Los-Cabos-Mexico_4x3_al

The first episode:

Bonnie and Kale were happily dating and living comfortable lives in Phoenix, Arizona where they enjoyed hiking, cooking and hosting game nights with friends. But that all changed when Bonnie jumped at the chance to start a company in Los Cabos, Mexico. She convinced Kale to join her business venture and the two set sail for south of the border. Bonnie, who’s mad about all things Mexican, is a Los Cabos vet, but for Kale who’s never been, the idea was both exhilarating and terrifying. Before their business can begin, the couple must settle on their first home together. Find out if the experience will tear them apart or bring them closer when House Hunters International cruises to Los Cabos, Mexico.

The second episode:

Paris and Antonio are leaving the rolling vineyards of Napa Valley, California to find their dream home in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. But the problem has been that until now, they’re all look and no buy. They’ve toured over 200 homes already, and even lost a deposit once before. Paris is fearful on settling, worried that just after she buys a home, a better one will crop up. Antonio, on the other hand, is afraid that the search will go on forever. He’s sick of being a visitor and wants to be a resident. It’s high time for this couple to find a home that works for both of them, and the sooner the better.

Unknown

Check out HGTV for when the episodes will air again!  And for your own HGTV experience of finding a home in Los Cabos… we can help you with that!

Stand Up Paddling in Los Cabos, Mexico

DCIM101GOPRO

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself afloat in the ocean.  SUP is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It is a great way to see the marine life, get a work out in, and see another side of Cabo.

At Medano Beach you can rent boards in several locations along the beach.  Companies like Cabo SUP and SUP Mexico both offer boards, lessons, and even yoga classes on the water.  If in San Jose, check out SUP rentals at the Cabo Surf Hotel.

IMG_0809 IMG_1195

A FEW TIPS IF YOU ARE JUST STARTING OUT:

  • Your feet should be centered between the edges of the board; parallel and about hip width apart
  • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight
  • Balance with your hips and core.  Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle.  Think of using your torso to paddle instead of your arms.  (great core workout!)
  • Look level at the horizon – not at your feet
  • Keep your head and shoulders steady and upright, and shift your weight by moving your hips.
  • If you paddle on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft.  Your left hand is on the top of the grip.
  • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. Paddle about 4-5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other.  When you switch sides, you will reverse hand positions.
  • Much like bicycling, when your forward momentum increases, your stability increases as well.
  • When you fall, fall into the water and not on the board, preventing injury.

Cabo San Lucas – where to go for great local eats

We have been in search of some of the best food (and best priced) in Los Cabos — this list is in no way comprehensive… just a few of our favorites to date as we still have more to try!

stock-illustration-23387705-fish-taco-cartoon

Best Taco’s

Taqueria Rossy –  In San Jose, so a must stop on the way back from picking up guests from the airport.  Can’t beat their fish taco at $15 pesos with all the fixings at the salad bar.  Also worth trying:  shrimp cocktail, quesadillas, or the shredded beef tacos.

Gardenias –  Open 8 am – 8 pm – cash only.  Best tacos in Cabo – and great shrimp salad.  Quick place to stop for a light lunch or dinner.

Gordo Leles – worth the stop just to see what all the fuss is about.  Tacos or Tortas that claim to be some of the best in Cabo.  Cash only.

Best Seafood:

Solomon’s Landing:  this place makes the list for several categories and was recently featured on Diners, Drive In, & Dives.  Everything is great – try the stuffed fish and finish with the Mexican Coffee.  Always a favorite for locals and tourists!

7 Seas Seafood Grille:   In the San Jose Corridor at the Cabo Surf Hotel – a nice place to take in the view, catch some waves, and enjoy the eco-friendly menu.  Everything tasted great – including the tacos!

Mis Suenos – the place to go to cook your fresh fish you catch!  Cooked 7 different ways with a beautiful presentation! Fun, fancy drinks and right on the marina. Victor and Poncho will take good care of you!

Mariscos Las Tres Islas: excellent seafood at good prices.  Up 4 blocks from Cardenas. Locals place; closes early.

IMG_3960

Other Favortie Places:

Campestre:  A continued family favorite.  We especially like the dinner specials, the taquitos, imperial shrimp, and any of the fish.  Must try the fruit waters and the margaritas.  Especially when it is mango season! Closed on Sundays.

Tiki Bar: 3×2 sushi rolls are the best bet. Also love the fish burger, taco salad, and Guy Ferreris list of favorites.  Tempura fish and chips yummy too! Good prices and right on the marina for the view!

Casacadas Beach Grill – best value for the view and food for beach dining.  Jazz on Tuesday nights!  Fresh fish and lobster.  Call ahead to reserve a table in the sand.

Best Desserts:

Señor Sweets  – casual atmosphere just outside Puerto Paraiso Mall with pizzas, salads, pastas, and of course what they are most known for — over 40 flavors of  Italian gelato. Truly features extraordinary temptations!

Cocina at Hacienda – best churros on the beach!  You can dine in the sand and watch the sun set over the marina. Menu is authentic taste of Mexico, everything tastes great! Nice wine and tequila list as well.

Best Spot for Kids:

Comicx – new restaurant and bar right at Puerto Paraiso Mall.  Casual atmosphere, extensive menu at great prices.  Best wings in Cabo.  Nice salads.  And their starting combo platter is always a hit with the kids.

Other spots to try if you have time:

The Office, Bahia Hotel, Hacienda del Coyote, and of course the visitors favorites Cabo Wabo, Giggling Marlin, and Squid Roe (just so you can say you were there!)

Gracious tiled terraces, shaded courtyards, balconies and expansive windows will offer stunning views of sea, sky and the surrounding Baja desert landscape. The guestrooms and suites will feature elegant, hacienda-style furnishings and luxurious bathrooms. A central gathering spot, complete with landscaped terraces, is designed for comfortable conversation and relaxation over morning coffee or sunset cocktails.

Multiple dining options will include the resort’s signature fine dining restaurant, as well as casual restaurants for indoor or outdoor dining, and 24-hour in-room dining. Menus will capitalize on the area’s abundant seafood and innovative use of fresh, local accompaniments. A full-service spa with fitness center and rotating schedule of wellness classes will feature an array of sea- and desert-inspired holistic treatments.

Year-round recreational pursuits include legendary sport fishing, superb snorkeling in crescent-shaped Santa Maria Bay, diving, boating, championship golf on a Fred Couples signature golf course, tennis, guided hikes, biking, cultural explorations, wine tasting and culinary classes and demonstrations. Seasonally, enjoy whale watching and the world’s largest marlin tournament.
